Research and Teaching Interests:

NMR spectroscopy:

- Particular interest in 2D-NMR and modern pulse sequences allowing complete signals assignment and stereochemical analyses;

 

- NMR applied to food analysis;

 

- NMR applied to biofluids and tissue extracts;

 

- 125Te-NMR spectroscopy.

IR and NIR spectroscopy:

- Applications to organic and organometallic chemistry.

Organic Synthesis:

- Europium and praseodymium chiral shift reagents;

 

- Derivatives of benzene chromium tricarbonyl;

 

- Derivatives of valence isomers of annulenes.

Theoretical Chemistry:

- Algorithms for generation of classes of isomers using graph theoretical approach.

 

- Prediction of chemical shifts in NMR spectroscopy.

EXPERIENCE:

Research:

After graduation completed two years of research activities in the field of organic synthesis. Presently continues the synthetic activities on an occasionally basis.

Fifteen years of experience in structure elucidation by NMR, IR and NIR methods.

Ten years of experience in natural mixture analyses by NMR methods.

Fifteen years experience in operating and servicing various NMR spectrometers including Varian A 60A, Varian Gemini - 300 and Bruker Avance DRX 400. Some experience in operating Varian VXR-400 and Varian UNITY-600 spectrometers.

Three years experience in operating and servicing Bruker Vector 33 and Vector 22 IR and NIR spectrometers.

Twelve years experience of servicing cryogenic superconducting magnets of various Bruker, Oxford and Varian types.

Management:

In 1990 organized a NMR laboratory and took part to the installation of a TESLA BS 587A, 80 MHz NMR spectrometer in the Polytechnic University, Bucharest.

Also, in 1990 took part in the organization of another NMR laboratory and the installation of a VARIAN Gemini-300 MHz NMR spectrometer in the Institute of Organic Chemistry, Bucharest. Between 1991 - 1997 has been in charge of the Superconducting NMR Facility (the most powerful NMR spectrometer installed in Romania until 1998).

In 1997 - 1998 organized another NMR laboratory and participated to the installation of a Bruker Avance DRX 400 MHz spectrometer. Since December 1998, head of the "National NMR Laboratory" currently hosting the most advanced NMR Spectrometer in the region (Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Albania, Turkey).

Between May 1993 - December 1994 coordinated the EU founded research project "Applications of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance to Rapid and Direct Measurement of Food Quality".

Between May 1995 - December 1996 coordinated the EU founded research project "Applications of Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy to Biofluids, Biopsies and Tissue Extracts in Connection with Cancer Characterization and Therapy Assessment".

Between 1995 - 2001 coordinated 11 Roumanian Academy, National Agency for Research and Innovation Agency, or Ministry of Education founded grants.

Member of the Organization Committee of the International Workshop on Modern Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Brasov, Romania, May 1995.

Extensive expertise (since 1991) in developing charitable projects supporting education and research in Romania, as Executive President of the "Spectroteam for Romania" Foundation.

Since 1998 supports Bruker’s operation in Romania, including management of the laboratory and users, demonstration activities and organization of exhibitions.
